Where else would you find Amy Grant's "Good for Me" and Duncan Shiek's "Barely Breathing" back to back?  Boston-based a cappella group Undertone takes that musical risk, and on their debut album It's About Time, no less.  The risk pays off.  Likewise, the rest of the nine-song compilation successfully showcases each group member's strengths.

The album gets a quick start with Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."  Soloist Adri handles the lead with a pure and consistent delivery of Houston's powerhouse hit from the eighties.  Adri takes on Ashlee Simpson's "Pieces of Me" with equal ferver on track eight.  She's one of three female members of the semi-professional group made up of Boston area college grads.  Undertone formed in 2004 and all of its members sang at their alma maters.  The former members of groups like Simmons' Sirens and Tufts' Amalgamates are keeping the a cappella magic strong in their post-undergrad lives.

Their first album comprises a cross section of hits from the 80s (Pat Benetar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot") to now (Maroon 5's "Sunday Morning").  As a whole, the compilation has a velvety feel.  It's About Time is upbeat, without being frantic.  It's smooth and easy to take in.

The delight of the album is found at the end, with Ehsan's performance of Mark Cohn's "Ghost Train."  His understated strong voice is a perfect fit for Cohn's deft songwriting, "Baby's got that bottle, filled with lightning and rain/He keeps calling out for someone, but she's riding on a train, riding on that ghost train."

Undertone is off to a great start with It's About Time.  On June 10th you can find them live at St. Mary's Church in Waltham, performing at Spring Fe-vah.  Find out more at www.undertoneboston.com.

The term "super group" is often thrown around to describe a band made up of members of other prominent groups who have decided to collaborate with one another, thus forming a collective of musicians who can bring the benefit of their years of musical experience to said new group.  Damn Yankees, Bad Company, and Audioslave come to mind.  Well, it’s about time we add another name to the list: Undertone.

A Boston-based a cappella group, Undertone is made up of alums from various Boston-area collegiate a cappella groups, including B.U., BC, Tufts, and Simmons.  Two recent Simmons graduates culled only the best a cappella singers from the area to form an exclusive group.  And what better venue to continue their global takeover than the studios of WERS’ All A Cappella.

Undertone's songs ran the genre gamut from the classic R&B hit “I Just Want To Be Close to You,” interpreting its sultry groove with lots of “doo-wops” and “shoo-bas,” to the disco classic “Boogie Oogie Oogie" (A Taste of Honey).  With tracks like these, Undertone is sure to go far, combining the best and the brightest of what Boston has to offer.
